Penilee, Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow was a planner's nightmare in the early seventies. Cheap housing estates like Penilee, were built on the outskirts in the sixties with good intentions. Like some US project housing, they were rife with poverty, crime and destitution. Despite this, Penilee had a strong community feeling when we were there in 1969-1970 but it did not last. Now, Penilee has neat rows of family homes in place of the old tenements that were torn down.
